I’m Gareth Reeves.
I’m a freelance proofreader based in Cambridge, with a PhD in English literature.
I know how much thought goes into a piece of writing. My role is to give it a careful final read, identifying errors and inconsistencies while respecting what you want to say.
My background in English literature gives me a close interest in language and the ways writers use it. My own doctoral research also gives me an understanding of the work involved in preparing a thesis.
I use Track Changes and comments in Microsoft Word to make my suggestions clear. Before I begin, I discuss your requirements with you, including any style guide or institutional policy I need to follow.
For specialist material, I’ll look at your brief and a sample before agreeing whether I can help.
My research and writing
My doctoral thesis at Durham University, Education or Exile: Individualism and Social Utility, 1870–1914, explores individualism and social utility in this period.
On Substack, I’m reading my way through the Modern Library Top 100 and writing about the novels along the way.
My professional development
I’m a member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP). My training includes its Proofreading Theses and Dissertations course.
